How to package before sending for delivery

When using the delivery services, all shipments need to be properly packaged to ensure the safety and security of goods, documents, mails during the delivery process, especially for long-distance deliveries. For each type of goods, documents are packaged differently depending on the shipment’s characteristics and weight. In order to sort the packages, different types of goods will be packaged and stamped for identification.

I. Packaging for standard delivery shipments

Any goods that are not in the special item list can normally be packaged using filler materials and individually packaged.

  • Uses filler materials that are: soft, shock-absorption to cushion the bottom, the walls and the top of the packaging box.
  • The goods are individually wrapped, then placed in the box and separated by cushioning materials such as foam, cloth, cotton, etc. The gaps must be filled with paddings to avoid goods colliding with each other during the delivery process causing damages.
  • Packaged goods need to have at least one flat surface to place the receiver’s address on top and stamp.
  • Goods that are packaged with polypropylene bags need to have an additional carton box on the outside.
  • If the goods have sharp points or protruding objects, you must use corrugated cardboard pieces to tape them or seal using pads.
  • Use adhesive tapes, plastic wraps to wrap and tie goods, do not use paper, cloth or rope to secure the package.
  • Receipts are to be placed inside the package before sealing it, while the outside must clearly show the document displaying the type of goods and the receiver’s address.

II. Packaging for special delivery shipments

1. Electronics goods

The electronic goods include laptops, smartphones, cameras, video recorders, LCD monitors, RAM, CPU chips, projectors, printers, etc., which are extremely fragile and frail. Therefore, these shipments need to be packaged differently and especially avoid collision during the delivery process.

  • The exterior packaging material must be cartons or wooden boxes.
  • The inner paddings need to be foam, cloth, bubble wraps, etc., that are elastic and collision-resistant during the delivery process.
  • Use bubble wrap paper to wrap the goods before placing them into the carton or wooden boxes.
  • Or use foams or cloth to cushion the bottom and the walls before placing the goods in; the foams need to fit with the goods, fixing the goods with the box. If there is empty space, then fit foam or air bubble wraps to fill the void before sealing.
  • Just like standard goods, use adhesive tapes or plastic wraps to secure the goods.

2. Fragile goods

Fragile items like pottery, chinaware, glass, etc., are wrapped with bubble wraps and use double-layer boxes for packaging.

  • Using bubble wrap to package the goods:
    • Air bubble wraps have great shock-absorption capabilities for goods and are able to wrap virtually any type of goods with any size and shape. Larger warps have better cushion ability.
    • Use air bubble papers to seal the goods completely; even the protruding parts and corners need to be sealed tight. It is recommended to use many layers to ensure goods’ safety.
    • Wrap each item and place them into the box with its top and sharp corners facing up top. Place a layer of cushioning at the bottom and the box walls to ensure extra protection while also filling in the extra space.
    • Each item needs to be wrapped by a cover sheet with a minimum size of 2 inches (5.08 cm) and placed 2 inches against the wall (5.08 cm) to ensure the goods are not damaged due to collisions during transportation, especially for long-distance international express delivery.
  • Using double-layer boxes to package:
    • Using double-layer boxes or packaging with multiple boxes to protect fragile goods at places where packaging is not suitable to transport, like express delivery using manual and automatic distribution systems.
    • Choose the second delivery box with the recommended size larger than the original at least 6 inches (15.44cm). Place a cushioning piece at the bottom of the new delivery box with 2 to 3 inches (5.08 to 7.64cm) of loose-fill materials (for goods weighing up to 10lbs or 4.54kg), air bubble wraps (for goods weighing up to 50lbs or 44.68kg), polyethylene sheets or other cushioning materials.
    • Put the manufacturer’s box above the cushioning layer and in the center of the delivery box. Place cushioning sheets in the remaining corners. Seal tight the lid with recommended materials and techniques.

3. Liquid goods

  • Bottled goods that contain liquid need to be placed in a sealed-tight wooden box or tin box, with empty space in between the items to insert water-absorbing materials in case the bottles break, causing leakage.
  • Before packaging, the bottles need to be sealed tight to prevent liquid from leaking even if they are upside-down.
  • If there are several bottles in one box, then you need to make sure they are separated with a cardboard tray or use elastic materials to fill in the holes to prevent the goods from shifting. Use additional cushioning materials like air bubble wraps, foams, cloth, packing peanuts, etc.

4. Rollable goods

  • Includes goods like paintings, maps, calendars, etc., are rolled up and put into plastic pipes and sealed on both ends.

5. Publication goods

  • Regarding publication goods like magazines, newspapers, catalogs, etc., need to be packaged precisely to avoid damage during the delivery process, causing the goods to be dirty, torn up, or wet. Tie the publication goods with elastic bands, then cushion the bottom, the walls and the top with filler materials.
